Hair sticks available in Canada

At-home hair styling is dexterously hard enough, but knowing what you can expect from a product can help. That’s why we reviewed four brands of the latest hair product trend: hair sticks. They’re like an oversized lip balm that promises to fix your hair and keep every strand in place. Do they hold up, though? Keep reading to find out.

So what’s the deal with hard water and our scalps?

Twist tube of JVN Perféct StyleFix Stick

JVN Perféct StyleFix Stick, $25, at sephora.ca

JVN Perféct StyleFix Stick Review

What the brand says: It’s a multitasking styling product that works to help smooth flyaways and control frizz—”from sleek ponytails to tousled texture.” It should work for straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair textures, as well as fine, medium and thick hair types.

What it’s like to use: We really liked the narrow shape that allowed us to flatten our hair easily, even near parts. It was also light enough to use when our hair was down, too.

The perfect ’do: This hair stick delivers on its versatile claims. It’s a good haul item to carry in your purse or even fix your look after a long-haul flight.

How to perfect the sleeked-back bun.

DesignMe HoldMe Styling Stick Review

What the brand says: Easy to use, as this hair styling product “glides effortlessly over hair without tugging or damaging baby hairs.” It’s also good for all hair types and textures. Plus, it’s vegan.

What it’s like to use: You can tell this one was vetted by hairstylists, as the packaging isn’t finicky and it has a narrow side and thick side (like a droplet) for choice and precision use. The scent is soft and floral, and it doesn’t flake.

The perfect ’do: If you’re doing a no-bump, and we mean perfect bun, this works beautifully. It might even replace your hard-hold hairspray. We also loved creating looks with our baby hairs with the tip of the stick.

Why is box-dye hair conditioner so damn good?

Push-up tube of Nexxus Slick Stick Hair Wax

Nexxus Slick Stick Hair Wax, $20, at shoppersdrugmart.ca

Nexxus Slick Stick Hair Wax Review

What the brand says: This smoothing wax protects from humidity and frizz and holds hair in place weightlessly, without product buildup. You can use the stick or your fingers to apply.

What it’s like to use: Admittedly, without a twist-up function, it took us a few minutes to figure out how to access the wax. But you simply use your thumb on the bottom to push the product up. Give it a swipe on a towel the first time you use it to get rid of the edges for a smoother application.

The perfect ’do: You know those days when you need unwashed hair that just isn’t convenient with your schedule? This product saves the day. It adds a bit of grit and hold, making hair more manageable for buns, pony and more.

TikTok says long hair is “cheugy”—but know this before you grab the scissors.

Tube of Vaseline Healing Jelly All-Over Body Balm Jelly Stick

Vaseline Healing Jelly All-Over Body Balm Jelly Stick, $12 at shoppersdrugmart.ca

Vaseline Healing Jelly All-Over Body Balm Jelly Stick Review

What the brand says: It’s the same dry skin relief you would find in your pot of Vaseline, except it’s more portable. It also comes in a coconut scent, too.

What it’s like to use: OK, OK, so we used this off-label for our hair looks. But we were travelling and didn’t have the space for yet another product in our Ziploc baggie. It offers more moisture than the other hair sticks we reviewed here, so don’t go crazy swiping it on your hair.

The perfect ’do: We love that this is less messy on the fingers than our regular pot of Vaseline, as you can put the stick exactly where you need it, from elbows to lips, to dry hair ends and baby hairs.
