Every time I’m in Los Angeles, I go to Erewhon. I always carve out time for it – it’s always on my itinerary. And you haven’t fully experienced LA until you’ve stood in front of its Tonic Bar choosing from a smoothie menu where each drink costs more than your lunch.
Every time, I leave with drink in hand, I can’t help but think that I could have made it at home for a fraction of the price. Of course, I don’t yet have most of the ingredients on hand. Sea moss gel isn’t sitting in my fridge. Liquid hyaluronic acid is not in my cupboard. Well, it was when I made the iconic Hailey Bieber smoothie, but I’m not restocking those ingredients regularly.
Blend it like Bieber: The Erewhon strawberry glaze skin smoothie recipe
Erewhon’s newest smoothie, Mocha Magic is available at all its locations until August 31, with a price tag of USD$11 (about $15 Canadian, BTW) for a 12-ounce cup. The recipe comes from a collab with DedCool, an LA-based fragrance brand. I’m quite obsessed with the idea of making a smoothie that tastes like a perfume. The new scent isn’t available until September, so this smoothie is literally a taste.
I recognize the brand from my laundry room, not my vanity. DedCool did a set of laundry detergent and dryer sheets with Ouai a while back. I bought the products on a whim after seeing the launch announcement on Insta. Obviously buying anything fragrance-wise online without smelling it first is always a risk, but the minute I unboxed and smelt the products, I was hooked. I’ve since expanded to buying a bottle of their new pet shampoo, so you know my dog smells better than most people – ha!
What is in Erewhon’s Mocha Magic Smoothie?
The smoothie has seven ingredients. And they are all things easily bought in Canada. Coconut cream, cold brew, cinnamon, vanilla powder, vanilla syrup, cacao powder and two dates. Nothing like Bieber’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie, which called for twelve ingredients and a product that has a two-ounce dropper bottle for $40 *cough liquid hyaluronic acid cough*. In fact, for this new mocha drink, I didn’t even have to order anything online.
So, if you’re in Canada, like me, enjoy this recipe and make it in your kitchen. Then, go for a hot girl walk and imagine you’re wandering the streets of Venice, California, with a delish drink in hand.
It’s a date: The perfect protein shake for after your workout.
Making DedCool’s Mocha Magic Smoothie At Home

Before you begin, use these FLEETSTREET recipe hacks:
- Coconut cream: Buy a can of full-fat coconut milk in the fridge overnight and scoop the thick cream off the top.
- Tahitian vanilla syrup: This is will most likely to send you on a scavenger hunt. Any vanilla syrup (Monin and Torani are both easy to find) will get you 90 per cent of the flavour that you want. If you want to go full-method actor, simmer equal parts sugar and water with a split Tahitian vanilla bean for five minutes, then cool.
- Vanilla powder: Bulk Barn usually has ground vanilla bean. If not, ½ tsp vanilla extract works.
- Coffee: Use cold brew, not chilled drip. The result is a smoother and less acidic taste. In a drink this creamy, you’ll taste the difference.
Ingredients
- 2 dates, pitted (Medjool dates recommended)
- 2 oz coconut cream
- 2 dashes cinnamon
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 3 oz cold brew coffee, already brewed and chilled
- 2 oz Tahitian vanilla syrup
- ½ tsp vanilla powder
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
Instructions
- If your dates are dense and hard, soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes, then drain, to make them soft and squishy. Medjool dates usually don’t require this step, though.
- Spoon the coconut cream into the bottom of your glass and dust it with a dash of cinnamon. Leave it; don’t stir it in. This is the layer you see at the bottom of the cup at Erewhon. Set aside.
- Now to your blender jar, add ice dates, cold brew, vanilla syrup, vanilla powder, cacao powder, a dash of cinnamon. Blend on high speed, until mixture becomes completely smooth, about one minute. That means no visible date bits. Blend again for 30 second-intervals, until the texture velvety. You can add ice, as desired, to make the smoothie less thick.
- When ready, slowly pour the smoothie from the blender over the coconut cream in the glass so the layers keep.
- Dust the top with a little extra cinnamon or cacao powder, and serve
