Deodorant is kinda like insurance: You don’t really know you need it until it’s likely too late. That’s why we tested the best deodorant brands in Canada. We want you to know something will stick and not stink. So the FLEETSTREET editors took all the deodorants we could get our hands on at drug stores, mass retailers and at product launches – all available in Canada, no international shipping fees required. We tried each natural deodorant before an event (a hot day hot-girl walk, sweaty workout, you get the idea), as well as after. We make note of the “natural” claims, price and availability, too. So the rest is up to you and your scent preferences.

Methodology

  • The deodorant: scent, formula, packaging, application
  • What makes it natural: product claims
  • The sweat test: workout and time
  • The sniff test: how well it works after it’s needed and post-sweat sesh application

Also note, none of these are antiperspirants. And that means, you will sweat. Deodorants are meant to take care of odour, not moisture. (We’ll save that for another article, if you’re interested.)

Which deodorant was recently recalled?

In July 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled three Power Stick roll-on deodorants in the United States for “cGMP deviations.” That means it wasn’t made according to Current Good Manufacturing Practice. No other information was released, and it’s not widely available in Canada.

The most recent deodorant recall in Canada was for Brut Classic Aerosol Spray Deodorant in 2022, due to potential exposure to benzene (a toxic-to-humans chemical used as a solvent in manufacturing), according to the Government of Canada

Nala Peppermint & Charcoal Natural Deodorant, $32, at nalacare.com.

Nala Natural Deodorant

The deodorant: This smells like post-meal peppermint tea. It’s refreshing and energizing. The twist-up and screw cap balm is easy to use. Plus the colour-block packaging makes it adorable, from the vanity to the gym bag. This clear balm is made for sensitive skin.

What makes it natural: So much to write here, it could be a novel. Using both charcoal and peppermint, instead of aluminum, this natural deodorant neutralizes body odour. It’s mostly made from organic ingredients – 90 per cent minimum. It’s also vegan and is not tested on animals. The packaging is also made from recycled paper and plastic and can be tossed in with household recycling. No refills available at press time.

The sweat test: According to package instructions, you’ll need to use this for least four weeks to get optimal results. But our tester did both for this deodorant review article. While travelling, we applied it first thing in the morning on what we’re told by locals was the hottest summer day in decades. Yet, we still wanted to check out the sites: La Tour d’Eiffel, check; L’Arc de Triomphe, check; Louvre, check; 31 Rue Cambon (IYKYK), check. It was a 12-hour day and 24,000-plus steps!

It goes on dry with a matte finish, doesn’t leave a residue, and does help to keep skin dry. And despite the scent of peppermint essential oils (ahhhhh!), our initial stress from staining our clothes was quickly muted. According to Nala’s website, this doesn’t darken underarms, can be used by “hot sleepers,” and you only need two swipes.

The sniff test: While we were refreshed with a terrace Aperol Spritz, we smelled pretty good. While in balm form, the peppermint smells strong, under our sleeves, it’s more subtle and clean. We like it!

La Rosée Fresh Deodorant, $21, at Shoppers Drug Mart.

La Rosée Fresh Deodorant

The deodorant: This lightly scented, non-sticky, natural deodorant is, dare we say, almost unscented. There’s no powerful note, but a subtle, overall fresh scent that includes bergamot, rose and sandalwood, among others. Now, I’m no nose, but for me it smells warm and floral. It’s a dense balm, like many other products under the La Rosée brand umbrella (Lisa wrote about its balm masque and eye treatment, both come in stick packaging, too, in this article about how balms work). The finish does have a teeny bit of shine, but dries matte.

What makes it natural: In place of alcohol and aluminum salts, this natural deodorant relies on probiotics to absorb sweat and odour, and 99 per cent of the ingredients are claimed to be natural. Plus, the packaging is recyclable and reusable – you can buy refills.

The sweat test: A three-hour summer hike – think 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, humidity included. While we tried to stay in the shade whenever possible, the sun struck hard that day. And it was a sweaty one. Surprisingly, the subtle scent stuck, and our pits were dry. We didn’t feel we needed a reapplication, but we went for it anyway. Another cool bonus from the light scent: It didn’t compete against any other scents we were wearing. That’s a win, too.

Teaology Balance Natural Deodorant, $17, at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Teaology Balance Natural Deodorant

The deodorant: This natural roll-on deodorant literally smells like a sheet mask. Makes sense, if you know what Teaology is; an Italian skin care brand with five popular sheet masks, with a long CV of face, body and hair care products, all about infusing the hydration and wellness benefits of tea. As a roll-on deodorant application, the liquid formula requires a bit more time to dry than a cream (about three minutes for us). It went on with a touch of shine but dried matte. We also tested it directly on cotton to see if it would stain or take a bit of time to dry. That took a bit longer (20 minutes for a centimetre of liquid). So we recommend applying it after putting on your bra, and then doing your skin care, brushing your teeth and doing your makeup, etc., before you get dressed, to avoid needing to wait for it to dry on your clothes.

What makes it natural: Free of aluminum salt and alcohol as ingredients, this natural roll-on deodorant uses organic Himalayan black tea and ginger extract, which are high in antioxidants, to stop not-so-good odour, as well as menthol for that fresh feeling, which is part of its promise for 92% of natural ingredients.

The sweat test: We dare you to name a better natural deodorant test than a hot yoga class. Mixed vinyasa with restorative, we were admittedly pushing our, and this deodorant’s limits in the 40-degree-Fahrenheit heat. And that’s particularly impressive considering our instructor decided to do a mini lesson on planks about three-quarters of the way into class, which went beyond our core, back and glutes, but also the axilla area (armpit), including the pec major, lats, subscapula, serratus and delts. (That’s where we felt it the next day, too.)

The sniff test: While the “fresh feeling” was definitely seeing its limits, we didn’t feel we smelled bad. We didn’t really feel we needed to reapply, but that was likely because of the wet application. We were already drenched with sweat from the room temperature at the yoga studio.

Humble Brands Aluminum-Free Deodorant in Palo Santo and Frankincense, $14, at Healthy Planet.

Humble Brands Deodorant

The deodorant: Earthy, luxe and lowkey spiritual, this deodorant smells like a high-end candle you’d light before journaling or winding down. Woody palo santo, a hint of incense, and just enough freshness to feel elevated, not overpowering. The balm glides on with zero drag, and the sleek, minimal packaging feels more apothecary than drugstore.

What makes it natural: The ingredient list is surprisingly short, including essential oils, baking soda, coconut oil and beeswax. It skips aluminum, dyes, and synthetic fragrance, and is certified cruelty-free.

The sweat test: Worn on a hot and sunny day out in Toronto that included urban hikes, a Blue Jays game, and dinner with the family. Not once did we feel the need to reapply. It held up without any clammy underarm feeling or odour.

The sniff test: Still smelled subtly of palo santo hours later. Warm, grounding, and surprisingly sophisticated for a deodorant. Bonus: no white marks on clothes, and no itchy post-shave sting.

From clear to tinted – our picks for the best brow mascaras in Canada.

Hello Sunny Daze 24-hr Deodorant, $12, at Well.ca

Hello Sunny Daze Deodorant

The deodorant: This scent reminds us of summer: citrus popsicle meets warm summer skin. It smells juicy, kind of like an actual glass of juice, but not in a sickly sweet way. It’s bright, happy, and makes us nostalgic. The solid stick formula goes on smoothly and with a soft finish that doesn’t feel sticky or greasy.

What makes it natural: Made without aluminum or parabens, this formula uses tapioca starch and tea tree oil to fight odour while allowing your skin to breathe. It’s also vegan, not tested on animals, and comes in a fully recycled plastic tube.

The sweat test: We wore this during a strength training session. Think: deadlifts, weighted squats – the whole deal. Even with our temperature climbing in the gym as the workout got intense, it held up. Our underarms stayed dry, and there was zero need for a midday top-up.

The sniff test: The scent stayed surprisingly true from morning to night. And unlike some fruity scents that smell “off” when mixed with sweat, this one stayed crisp and clean. It’s subtle enough, too, so it didn’t clash with our perfume either.
